The Peasant Dance,” 1567, by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, known in Dutch as De boerendans or De dorpskermis (lit. ‘The Village Fair’), is an oil on panel created by the Netherlandish Renaissance artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder around 1567. It was looted by Napoleon Bonaparte and taken to Paris in 1808, before being returned in 1815. The scene depicted in this painting showcases an annual festival celebrated on the feast day of the village patron saint, with the prominent red flag hanging from the building on the left indicating that the festival is dedicated to St. George. The atmosphere of the painting primarily emphasizes dancing, drinking, and music-making, resulting in a lively and joyful ambiance throughout the piece.
