Description
The New York Kouros is an early example of life-sized statuary in Greece. This marble statue of a Greek youth, known as kouros, was carved in Attica, features an Egyptian pose, and is otherwise detached from the block of stone. It is named for its current location at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The Metropolitan Museum of Art states in “Marble statue of a kouros (youth)” that “The statue marked the grave of a young Athenian aristocrat.” Today, more copies of ancient Greek sculptures are exhibited in museums than the original artworks, which have often succumbed to the passage of time. However, Greek sculpture was never static; it was an art form that evolved over the centuries.
