When you walk through the remains of the Ancient Roman Forum, you can’t help but feel the pulse of a thriving city and imagine scenes like these:
Seasoned orators behind a marble podium, offering new ideas to a gathering crowd… informed citizens meeting outside the courthouse to discuss the day’s events… impassioned debates, both on the Senate floor and in the streets… the hustle and bustle of a thriving shopping district…
A stroll through the Forum is both humbling and inspiring. More than just a community meeting place, the Roman Forum was the crucible of ideas, dialogue, relationships and action – the heartbeat of Roman society.
In Ancient Rome, form and function were closely linked. The cultural exchanges of the Forum were ultimately made possible by architecture and technology that was truly ahead of its time.
The very first people to design and build on a grand scale, the Romans equipped their most important buildings with under-the-floor heating and indoor plumbing. What we think of as modern conveniences such as running water and working toilets were common in well-to-do households. Immense above-ground aqueducts carried water for hundreds of miles. Some Romans even lived in apartment buildings!
The complexity and elegance of Roman engineering was unrivaled for over 1000 years.
But at the end of the 5th century, as Rome burned and the Empire collapsed… so too did the libraries, the buildings, and countless technological advances.
Few people truly understand the magnitude of this tragedy. Not until the early modern era did we begin to reclaim all that we lost when Rome fell. And it wasn’t until early in the 20th century that the ruins of the Roman Forum were finally unearthed.
If you’ve never experienced marvel of the Forum, I urge you to take the time to do so on your next trip to Italy. It is truly a living link to one of the greatest civilizations in the world!
